LABUAN, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM), the operator of Labuan's containerised port, is intensifying collaboration with relevant government agencies to strengthen its operations and enhance cargo handling efficiency.

In a move to foster closer ties, MPM's top management has initiated a series of engagement sessions through courtesy calls with key government stakeholders.

Chief operating officer Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong told Bernama that this initiative is a crucial step in overcoming the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely impacted cargo handling operations between 2020 and 2022.

This initiative, he said, marks a significant phase in MPM's post-pandemic recovery efforts, aimed at enhancing operational resilience and ensuring the port's continued growth and contribution to the region's economy.

"Cargo handling operations are beginning to pick up, and therefore, it is time for MPM to engage more closely with relevant government agencies and stakeholders.

"By forging strong partnerships with these agencies, issues related to security, port operations, and management can be effectively resolved," Tiong said.

MPM's top management has made courtesy calls to the National Security Council (NSC), Department of Environment (DoE), Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), the Health Department, Malaysia Office of the Chief Government Security Officer, and other government agencies.

Upcoming visits are planned for the Fire and Rescue Department and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).

Tiong emphasised that with cargo handling operations gradually recovering, MPM’s proactive approach is set to position the port as a key player in the island's logistics and supply chain network, serving both consumers and industry leaders in the oil and gas sector.

"The strengthened ties with government agencies are seen as crucial to supporting the port's long-term success and contribution to the regional economy," he added.
