KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- A recent study by Shopee Malaysia has revealed that 98 per cent of its respondents believe that shopping locally helps strengthen and uplift underserved communities.

In a statement today, the online e-commerce platform said this highlights a sense of national pride and solidarity among consumers.

Ahead of Malaysia’s 67th National Day, its “Sayangi Malaysia, Jom Rai Lokal 2024” study of over 2,000 Malaysian shoppers reveals that Malaysians are 15 times more likely to support local entrepreneurs over international brands, reflecting a strong commitment to homegrown businesses.

Its head of marketing and business intelligence Tan Ming Kit said supporting local products and services helps celebrate Malaysia’s heritage, strengthens the community, and boosts the economy.

“Supporting local businesses goes beyond just making a purchase; it is an investment in our community and the future of our economy,” he said.

The study reveals that nine in ten Malaysians trust local sellers to fulfil orders and address inquiries effectively, highlighting the reliability and service quality of local businesses and reinforcing the bond between consumers and homegrown brands.

Other than supporting local businesses, the survey also showed that 70 per cent of Malaysians strongly support women and rural sellers.

This highlights the importance of inclusivity and empowerment in the local economy, contributing to broader economic development and a more equitable marketplace.

Furthermore, 80 per cent of respondents prefer made-in-Malaysia products, reflecting their appreciation for local craftsmanship and their commitment to promote local communities. This helps ensure a more balanced distribution of economic opportunities.

Shopee has also taken steps to support local sellers to include features like cash on delivery, on-time guarantee, and a 15-day free returns policy.

As a result, 85 per cent of respondents are more likely to support local sellers, highlighting the important balance between convenience and reliability when shopping online.

Tan added that with National Day approaching, this collective effort becomes even more meaningful because the choice to buy local strengthens communities and honours the spirit of independence and unity.
