KUCHING, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- CelcomDigi Bhd and Borneo Restu Sdn Bhd have entered into a strategic partnership to enhance high-speed Internet access across Sarawak under the point of presence (PoP) Phase 2 project in support of the state’s ongoing digital transformation efforts.

The collaboration marks a milestone in the PoP Phase 2 project, which is designed to improve connectivity throughout the state, with a focus on expanding Internet access in suburban and rural areas, especially to schools, a joint statement said today.

“Enhanced digital access will empower communities by opening up new opportunities for businesses, driving digital innovation, attracting investments, and creating new jobs, contributing to enhancing the quality of life for Sarawakians, as well as the overall economic development of the state,” the statement said.

“This partnership is a step in the development of Sarawak’s digital infrastructure as we join forces to facilitate better digital access, ensuring that the enhanced connectivity benefits all Sarawakians,” CelcomDigi chief executive officer Datuk Idham Nawawi said at a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony to formalise the partnership.

He added that the company is also exploring other initiatives to accelerate Sarawak’s digitalisation efforts.

Borneo Restu managing director Ian W Lee said the company is ready to implement the PoP Phase 2 project, which is set to be completed by end-2025.

Last year, the Communications Ministry allocated RM3.9 billion to continue PoP Phase 2 implementation involving 3,693 PoP sites near schools in rural areas.

Borneo Restu was allocated with RM1.08 billion to build 681 PoP sites across Sarawak.

The statement said CelcomDigi is also part of the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation’s SMART600 project.

“At present, CelcomDigi’s 4G coverage in populated areas for the state stands at 90 per cent, with further improvements expected as the company accelerates its post-merger network integration and modernisation exercise,” it said.
