KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 (Bernama) – Taobao Malaysia has officially launched its first-ever beta English interface, aiming to provide a more accessible and user-friendly experience for local users.

This new feature is introduced in response to growing demand from Malaysian shoppers, enabling them to explore a wider variety of products on the platform without the language barrier.

The beta English interface is being introduced simultaneously in Malaysia and Singapore, making Malaysia one of the first markets to experience this enhanced shopping option.

The new interface is powered by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which automates translations on the platform. Additionally, the app will offer customer support in both English and Chinese to ensure smooth communication.

Country Manager for Tmall Taobao World, Malaysia, Jess Lew, said the initiative is a direct response to local demand and the company is committed to further improving the interface based on customer feedback.

“With the launch of the Taobao beta English interface, we are thrilled to provide a platform that caters to the diverse needs of our Malaysian customers.

“This initiative is driven by the strong demand we have observed from local users, and we believe it will enhance their shopping experience by minimising language barriers,” she said in a statement today.

The new interface will include detailed product descriptions in English, Ringgit Malaysia (RM) price conversions, and a more intuitive user experience tailored to the shopping habits of Malaysians.

Taobao also boasts a robust payment and logistics infrastructure, supported by Antom and Cainiao, to ensure seamless and reliable transactions and deliveries.

Malaysian users can opt for various payment methods, including debit/credit cards, e-wallets, and credit card instalments, with order tracking available through the app.

According to the 2023 EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), Malaysia ranks third in Asia for high English proficiency, with over 20 million English-speaking citizens, underscoring the potential for the English interface to serve a broader audience.

General Manager of Tmall Taobao World, Jianqiu Ye, said the new interface is part of the company's commitment to breaking geographical boundaries and serving the diverse needs of its global customer base.

“The Taobao beta English interface is a testament to our dedication to serving the diverse needs of our global customer base. We believe this launch will open up new opportunities for Malaysian shoppers to discover and enjoy the great diversity of products available on Taobao,” he said.

To celebrate the launch, Taobao is offering several limited-time promotions, including free air shipping for fashion items above RMB199, new user perks worth RMB65, and free returns for the first order. Dual-language customer service support will also be available daily from 9 am to 9 pm.

The Taobao app, featuring the new English interface, is available for free download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Malaysians are encouraged to provide feedback on the beta version to help improve the platform.
