Halal Industry More Comprehensive, Can Complement Islamic Economy -- PM Anwar

17/09/2024 01:51 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- The halal industry can complement the Islamic economy, as it is inclusive and comprehensive, and gives a positive impact on the broader community, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He noted that the halal industry engages all segments of the community, including the farmers, fishermen, micro, small and medium enterprises, as well as retailers.

"In achieving the goals of the MADANI Economy and the principles of Maqasid Shariah, it must engage nearly the entire population," he said during the launch of the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2024.

In his speech, Anwar also expressed his appreciation to several foreign leaders, particularly from countries he recently visited, for their strong support of the halal industry and for acknowledging Malaysia's efforts in promoting it.

He noted that they have shown significant interest in the halal industry and have recognised the role of the Malaysian government and authorities in driving its growth, adding that they are also seeking Malaysia’s cooperation to boost trade and investment, including in halal-related sectors.

"This is a remarkable feat achieved by MATRADE and the government, as it allows us to further explore the significance of halal and why Islam emphasises its importance across various sectors, including food products, cosmetics, and other related industries," he added.

During the launch, Anwar presented the Special National Halal Development Excellence Award to former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in recognition of his contributions to the halal industry.

The award was accepted by his son, Tan Sri Kamaluddin Abdullah on his behalf.

Abdullah was chosen as the first recipient of the award, as both the inaugural MIHAS in 2004 and the establishment of the Halal Development Corporation in 2006 took place during his tenure as Prime Minister.

MIHAS 2024 is jointly organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

Themed 'Globalising Halal Innovations', the four-day showcase starts today and ends on Sept 20.
