Energy Storage Key To Solar Power Integration -- Citaglobal

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- As Malaysia is at a critical point in its green energy transition, energy storage is key to the transformation as it allows for effective management of renewable energy (RE) and supports the development of a sustainable, low-carbon future, said Citaglobal Bhd. 

While Malaysia incorporates more RE into the grid, the focus must be on developing resilient and flexible systems that can meet evolving demands, said Citaglobal’s executive director of energy division, Aimi Aizal Nasharuddin.

“With battery energy storage systems (BESS) like the Malaysia Battery Energy Storage System (MYBESS), we are not only setting a foundation for energy security but also delivering a firm supply of RE at cost-competitive tariffs.

“Initiatives like the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) also pave the way for greater corporate adoption of clean energy,” he said in a statement today. 

According to the statement, Malaysia’s current energy grid, which is predominantly supported by thermal-based power plants utilising coal and natural gas as fuel, faces the challenge of balancing the intermittent power contributed by the influx of grid-connected solar power stations.

“Citaglobal’s MYBESS -- developed locally in partnership with Genetec -- can play a critical role in stabilising the grid by providing frequency regulation, load balancing, voltage stabilisation and smoothing the power fluctuations through efficient storage and release of surplus energy,” it said.

MYBESS is designed to store and release surplus energy efficiently, providing backup support that helps stabilise the grid and enhances Malaysia’s capacity to handle intermittent energy sources like solar.

Meanwhile, Citaglobal said it is actively participating in CRESS and is currently in discussions with potential corporate consumers to drive further adoption of BESS.

Under Budget 2025, the government has prioritised enhancing the national energy infrastructure with a significant investment of RM16 billion to modernise the transmission and distribution networks that will support the integration of RE sources and facilitate Malaysia’s transition towards net-zero emissions by 2050.

Additionally, it continues to push for green technology adoption through initiatives like the extension of the Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme and the Green Technology Financing Scheme.
