KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- The Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) must actively develop strategic plans to address the persistent regulatory challenges faced by palm oil-producing nations, urged Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
He said these persistent challenges arose from protectionist measures, potentially leading to trade barriers.
“CPOPC (must) actively develop strategic plans to tackle these challenges constructively, ensuring inclusivity of smallholders, fair treatment, market access, and the promotion of sustainable practices within the sector,” he said during the 12th Ministerial Meeting of CPOPC, held recently in Jakarta, Indonesia.
In a statement, CPOPC said the meeting underscored the urgent need to enhance its flagship programmes, particularly those related to smallholders, sustainability, and positive campaigns.
“By doing so, CPOPC can strengthen its key role in the global palm oil sector, contributing to the achievement of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development while addressing existing global challenges, including trade-restrictive measures imposed by importing countries,” it said.
The council also reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a science-based understanding of palm oil.
“A key priority is conducting comprehensive studies to produce strong evidence of palm oil’s positive role in driving economic growth, ensuring food security, and achieving sustainable development goals.
“By publishing reliable, internationally credible data, members believe CPOPC can address and counter misinformation, misconceptions, and unsubstantiated claims surrounding the industry,” it said.
CPOPC emphasised its critical role in ensuring the well-being and inclusivity of oil palm smallholders through various programmes that promote sustainable practices across the oil palm industry.
“These initiatives focus on empowering smallholders by supporting access to essential resources, training, and capacity-building opportunities while strengthening their collective voice on the global stage,” it added.
