MELAKA, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- The Southern Gateway Economic Corridor is the best medium for coordinating high-impact development projects that can generate sustainable economic growth.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the corridor would involve development in the border areas involving Melaka, Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
“A discussion session with the Menteri Besar of Johor and Negeri Sembilan was held on Sept 11 with projects that would be a priority, including the construction of the West Coast Highway, Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail and the Southern Padi Bowl.
“This is In addition to the development of economic zones such as the Maharani Gateway, Straits Melaka Waterfront Economic Zone and Smart Artificial Intelligence (AI) Container Port in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan,” he said at the Melaka State Legislative Assembly session in Seri Negeri here today.
He was responding to a question by Low Chee Leong (PH-Kota Laksamana) who wanted to know the status of the proposed Southern Gateway Economic Corridor and the type of development that would be built in the area.
Explaining further, Ab Rauf said a Southern Gateway Economic Corridor Development Workshop was held from Dec 16 to 18 as a platform for stakeholders and government representatives from the three states to gather and detail the terms of reference for the corridor's development.
He said the creation of the Southern Gateway Economic Corridor is expected to complete infrastructure development and boost the state economy through various sectors including industry, agriculture and tourism for the three states.
He said that among the things discussed in the development workshop also included listing projects that have been and are being planned by the state and federal governments within a radius of 5 to 10 kilometres from the Melaka and Johor borders as well as the Melaka and Negeri Sembilan borders.
“Discussing forms of cooperation between states to strengthen the creation of the Southern Gateway Economic Corridor includes the development of projects through allocations from the federal and state governments and development through privatisation initiatives.
“All development project proposals from these stakeholders will be coordinated for project applications in the federal Government’s 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP),” he said.
