SUBANG, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is prepared to adapt to global changes, including potential shifts in US policy under a second Trump administration, without significant disruption to its natural resources and environmental sustainability agenda, Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said.
He said a key emphasis for Malaysia would be to foster multinational cooperation, particularly in areas of climate and environmental sustainability, reflecting the nation’s commitment to open trade and pragmatic governance.
“Our two biggest trading partners are the US and China, and we will continue to keep our doors open to everyone,” he told reporters after officiating at the Small and Medium Enterprise Environmental, Social and Governance Start Symposium 2025 here today.
Alliance Bank Malaysia Bhd organised the symposium in collaboration with UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei.
Acknowledging that adjustments may be necessary, the approach will emphasise adaptability and dialogue, he said.
“We cannot ignore the US as it is a major economy and a global power. However, we will also engage with other partners to ensure balanced trade and collaboration,” he added.
On the free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations between Malaysia and the European Union (EU), Nik Nazmi said Malaysia stands to benefit significantly as it aligns with the nation’s preparedness in sustainability and environmental standards.
“Malaysia is a trading country. The more doors and platforms that are open, the better.
“The EU has stringent requirements on sustainability, climate, emissions, and forestry. Our ability to pursue and expand this partnership demonstrates that the Malaysian economy is ready,” he said.
He said Malaysia’s integrated approach to trade and sustainability, also involves collaboration among key ministries.
“We adopt a whole-of-government, whole-of-nation approach. Whenever the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) negotiates trade deals, we provide input.
“Similarly, when we craft sustainability policies, we engage with MITI, the Economy Ministry, and other agencies to ensure alignment,” he added.
