KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has strengthened Malaysia’s position in the global semiconductor industry through a strategic partnership with Xiamen University (XMU) and GMPT Software.

MIMOS Berhad (MIMOS), in a statement today, said through the strategic partnership, XMU today sponsored and presented a USD 2 million semiconductor simulation software from General Mathematical-Physics Technology Co., Ltd. (GMPT) to MIMOS Berhad.

The advanced TCAD (Technology Computer-Aided Design) software will enhance device modelling, material characterisation, and process optimisation, benefiting both R&D and industry applications.

The statement said the sponsorship strengthens Malaysia’s semiconductor ecosystem, supporting technological advancements, talent development and global competitiveness in the semiconductor industry.

“This initiative marks a significant step in advancing semiconductor research and development in Malaysia. The technology sponsorship by Xiamen University China marks a major milestone in the Government-to-Government (G2G) collaboration between Malaysia and China,” the statement said.

“Developed by GMPT Software, the cutting-edge TCAD software enables precise simulation of semiconductor devices, essential for next-generation chip development. To maximise its impact, MIMOS will house and manage the software through its Industry Technology Innovation Centre (ITIC) and MIMOS Academy.

“The software will be available at MIMOS with online training sessions facilitating seamless adoption by local talent and professionals,” it said.

Present at the sponsorship presentation ceremony were Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Chang Lih Kang, along with the Xiamen University delegation, which included Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Xiamen University Malaysia President Prof Wang Ruifang.

Also in attendance were GMPT Software Chief Executive Officer Yang Meng and Xiamen University Council Chairman Prof Zhang Rong.

Meanwhile, Chang said the partnership is a game-changer for Malaysia’s semiconductor ecosystem and with this software now available at MIMOS, Malaysia can enhance R&D capabilities, train local talent, and strengthen Malaysia’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.

“We are grateful to Xiamen University and GMPT Software for their forward-looking collaboration,” he said.
