Bukit Aman Increases NCID Staffing In 13 Sarawak Districts

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- The decision to increase staffing in the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) across 13 districts in Sarawak is aimed at strengthening security following the relocation of Indonesia’s capital to East Kalimantan, said Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

The Inspector-General of Police expressed his full support for NCID’s proactive efforts to enhance staffing levels in the districts.

“Alhamdulillah, this effort has also garnered support from the state government, with the goal of curbing drug abuse among members of the public.

“In addition, this measure aims to strengthen security following the relocation of Indonesia’s capital to the East Kalimantan province,” he said during the IGP’s monthly assembly, organised by the Bukit Aman NCID here today.

According to Razarudin, the need for increased staffing was in response to the evolving threat of narcotics crime, which was influenced by global technological developments.

“The reality is that the changing trends in drug abuse and addiction are becoming more dangerous. Between the 1960s and 1990s, drug addiction among Malaysians primarily involved the use of traditional substances such as heroin, morphine, and ganja.

“However, since the 1990s, the trend in drug abuse has shifted, with most addicts turning to chemically produced substances such as amphetamine, methamphetamine, and psychotropic pills,” he said.

Razarudin stated that the shift in drug addiction patterns resulted in greater harm than the use of traditional substances, as it could lead to memory loss and a deterioration of one’s mental state.

“The JSJN, as the focal point for addressing drug addiction, abuse, and trafficking, must always be alert and proactive in the face of globalisation, which has made drug syndicates more cunning and complex,” he said.
