BUTTERWORTH,  Dec 20 (Bernama) -- The Penang Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (MAQIS) seized 27 tonnes of frozen sausages worth RM37,617 from China due to misleading import documents at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT), here today.

In a statement Penang MAQIS said checks found that the import documents falsely declared the shipment as “Frozen Cuttlefish Intestines.” DNA testing of the samples revealed chicken DNA, rather than the stated contents.

“The sausages lacked necessary Veterinary Health and Halal Certificates, raising concerns over food safety and halal authenticity,” read the statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 13 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011, which prohibits the provision of false or misleading information in the importation of agricultural products.

MAQIS assured that enforcement and inspections of agricultural products entering the country would be intensified to ensure food safety for Malaysians.
