SIBU, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Sarawak has deployed 500 enforcement personnel to carry out the Chinese New Year (CNY) Special Operation 2025 from Jan 20 to Feb 9, with the goal of reducing road accidents.

Its director Norizan Jil said the special operation covers various categories such as Ops Motosikal, Ops Kenderaan Perkhidmatan Awam (KPA), Ops Kenderaan Perkhidmatan Barangan (KPB), Ops Teknikal and Ops 9 Big Sin to ensure road safety.

“JPJ is also enforcing a driving ban on goods service vehicles (KPB) on Jan 27 and 28 (before the celebration) and Feb 1 and 2 (after the celebration), with intensive monitoring by enforcement teams.

Norizan also conducted an inspection of express buses at the Jalan Pahlawan Sibu Express Bus Terminal together with the Sibu JPJ enforcement team.

According to him, drivers who violate the ban will be fined and their vehicles will be impounded for 48 hours under Section 59 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Norizan said that technical inspections on express buses have been conducted for a week starting Jan 13 at depots throughout Sarawak to ensure the safety of the vehicles.

Buses that pass the inspection are issued a valid inspection slip for one week, while those with technical issues are prohibited from operating until repairs are completed, he said.

Users of the Pan Borneo Highway are also advised to drive prudently as the number of vehicles is expected to increase sharply during the Chinese New Year holidays and school holidays, he added.

He said the main factors contributing to road accidents have been identified as driver negligence, vehicle conditions, road conditions, and weather, with an emphasis on avoiding drowsy driving.

He also urged the public to report any traffic violations they witness so that immediate action can be taken against rule-breaking drivers.
