KOTA KINABALU, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- Fifty-five squatter houses here were demolished today in a bid to combat crimes and ensure the safety and comfort of residents in surrounding areas.

The Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters said the Squatter Colony Demolition Operation involved the cooperation of various agencies, including the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

Other agencies involved in this year's first squatter colony demolition operation were the National Registration Department (JPN), Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), Land and Survey Department (JTU) and the Chief Minister's Department (JKM).

"The demolition of these houses is not only aimed at eradicating illegal housing but also to ensure the safety and comfort of residents in surrounding areas,” it said in a statement today.

It added that the operation would continue to be carried out as an effort to combat crimes, illegal immigrants, drugs and social ills in Kota Kinabalu.

"The Kota Kinabalu police is committed to ensuring this district is free from any criminal or illegal activities,” he said.
