KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from an individual over racially offensive content uploaded on his social media platform.

In a statement, the commission said it also seized a mobile phone and a SIM card to facilitate the investigation.

“The content is believed to be related to the recent appointment of a new Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), featuring a racial narrative that could potentially provoke unrest and threaten national unity and harmony.

“Following this incident, the individual was called in to give his statement and assist in the investigation,” the statement said.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, if convicted.

“MCMC would like to remind the public not to upload, share, or spread any content that touches on religious, racial or royal institution sensitivities (3Rs), especially those that can divide society and disrupt national harmony.

“MCMC remains committed to ensuring the country’s cyberspace remains safe, secure and respected, in line with efforts to strengthen national unity and harmony among Malaysia’s multiracial society,” the statement added.

Earlier, the media reported that Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng created history as the first Chinese senior officer to be promoted to Lieutenant General in the MAF.
