Penang Police Arrest Four Men With Drugs Worth Over RM53,000 In Seberang Jaya, Gurun

BUKIT MERTAJAM, July 22 (Bernama) -- Penang police busted a drug distribution syndicate after arresting four men and seizing various types of drugs. worth RM53,500, in raids in Seberang Jaya here and Gurun, Kedah.

Its acting chief, Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said a team from the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) conducted the operation from 4 pm on Sunday to 5 am yesterday, and nabbed four local men, aged between 32 and 61.

He said that in the first raid, three men were arrested in a parking lot in Seberang Jaya, and a subsequent search of their car found two canvas bags containing 10 plastic packets of compressed ganja leaves, weighing 9,920 grammes (g), stored in the boot.

In a follow-up raid in Gurun, police arrested another man in the vehicle parking area. A further search revealed a sack containing seven plastic packets of compressed dry leaves, believed to be ganja, weighing 6,995 g. Also seized were four packets of heroin weighing 30.34 g and three packets of methamphetamine weighing 3.45 g from the man, with all the seized drugs valued at RM53,500," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Alwi said that based on investigations, the syndicate obtained its supply of ganja from drug distribution networks, including from neighbouring countries, before packaging it in small quantities and selling it for the market in Penang, and that the syndicate had been actively distributing drugs since May and that the total amount of drugs seized could be used by approximately 35,000 addicts.

He added that all the suspects have been remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
