PUTRAJAYA, July 28 (Bernama) — Newly-appointed Court of Appeal President Datuk Abu Bakar Jais described his new role as a huge responsibility and significant challenge, especially in upholding justice in a multiracial and multi-religious nation.

Speaking to reporters after taking his oath of office at the Palace of Justice’s Conference Hall, Abu Bakar, 63, acknowledged that as President of the Court of Appeal, meeting everyone's expectations would be no easy task.

“In fact, it is impossible to satisfy everyone, but hopefully I can discharge my duty without fear or favour,” he said.

He acknowledged the pressures that come with the role but expressed confidence in the support of his fellow judges, saying he could rely on their cooperation.

Abu Bakar noted that the Court of Appeal currently has a full bench of 32 judges, although two are set to retire soon.

He said the Court of Appeal currently has the capacity to form eight panels, but he plans to expand that number to 10, expressing hope that with more panels and judges, the disposal of appeal cases could be expedited.

Meanwhile, Datuk Azizah Nawawi, 63, admitted she was surprised by her appointment as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, the judiciary’s fourth-highest position, given that she had been serving as a Court of Appeal judge.

“Alhamdulillah, I have been selected to be the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. I am from Sibu, so I’m very happy to be considered for this post. I will do my job,” she told reporters.

When asked if she felt pressure being the first woman appointed Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Azizah said she was no stranger to high-pressure roles, having previously served in the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

“Pressure is part and parcel of life; it should be manageable,” she said.

Azizah added that she intends to build on the work of her predecessors and will continue doing her best to serve the judiciary in East Malaysia.
