Post-Mortem On Zara Qairina Completed, Reburial To Be Held Tonight

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- The remains of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir were brought out of the Forensic Medicine Department at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital at about 9.30 pm today after the post-mortem was completed.

It is understood that the procedure concluded at 7.30 pm, and the body will be reburied tonight at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, located about 130 kilometres from here.

Kota Kinabalu district police chief ACP Kasim Muda, when met by reporters, said there were no untoward incidents while members of the public gathered in the hospital compound since this morning.

“Everything was calm, and I thank everyone for their cooperation. I request that the public now cooperate by dispersing,” he said, declining to comment further.

The process of exhuming the remains was completed at 7.15 pm yesterday, before the body was taken to the hospital.

Last Friday, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) in a statement said that Zara Qairina’s remains needed to be exhumed to enable a post-mortem procedure to be carried out on the student.

The AGC was of the view that further investigation by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) was necessary to ensure all aspects of the case could be thoroughly examined.

Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17.

The student had been taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the hostel of a religious school in Papar at 4 am on July 16.
