KANGAR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (Customs) seized cannabis and cigarettes worth a total of RM2,954,820 in three separate incidents early this month.
Perlis Customs director Ismail Hashim said they seized 30 kilogrammes (kg) of cannabis worth RM2.94 million during an inspection of the Kuala Perlis marine entry point at 1 am, Aug 7.
"Inspections found four gunny sacks filled with 146 transparent plastic packs filled with cannabis,” he said at a media conference at the Kuala Perlis Marine Enforcement Brach near here today, adding that the case would be investigated under Section39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
He also shared that they seized 22,400 cigarettes worth RM6,720 with unpaid tax of RM15,456 during a check on a Proton Iswara by the roadside of Jalan Kuala Sungai Baru, Kuala Perlis driven by a man at 4.45 pm, Aug 6.
"The man, 54, was arrested and later released on Customs bail of RM5,000,” he said, adding that they also seized 27,000 cigarettes worth RM8,100 with unpaid tax of RM18,630 at an unoccupied house at the back of a shope in Taman Kepala Batas in Kedah at 3.30 am, Aug 7.
The cases are being investigated under Section 135(1) and 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
