NILAI, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- Police arrested five Africans in a raid to break up a 'Love Scam' syndicate, that has been active for the past two years and involved a total of almost RM 1 million, in a housing area here yesterday.

Nilai district police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim said all the suspects, comprising three men and two women, in their 30s and 40s, were arrested at about 1.50 pm.

He said all the suspects were running a Love Scam fraud by targeting local and foreign citizens through Facebook using fake account profiles since 2023 until now.

"During the raid, a suspect tried to escape by jumping from the third floor and broke his ribs. Investigations show that this syndicate used various fake accounts on Facebook to deceive local and international victims and is believed to have raked in profits of up to RM1 million from fraudulent activities," he said in a statement here today.

Abdul Malik said police also seized four laptops, 15 mobile phones, two tablet computers, 11 debit cards from various banks, two Wi-Fi modems and two USB drives used in the criminal activity.

He also said the case is being investigated under Sections 420 and 120B of the Penal Code (for cheating, criminal conspiracy), and all suspects were remanded for four days until Sept 1.
