SEREMBAN, Sept 8 (Bernama) -- The post-mortem results of two siblings who died after the parked car they were in rolled into Sungai Linggi in Tanjung Agas, Port Dickson on Sept 4 confirmed that their deaths were caused by drowning, with no signs of foul play.

Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the post-mortems on the eight-year-old girl and her six-year-old brother were completed on Sept 5 at Port Dickson Hospital.

He said investigations are still ongoing, with statements taken from 15 witnesses including the children’s mother, who is the former wife of the father, as well as several individuals who were at the scene to assist in the probe.

“As for the children’s religious status, it is still under investigation by the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS). The investigation will require some more time to be completed,” he said in a statement here today.

Alzafny said a thorough and transparent investigation is being carried out, taking into account witness statements, forensic evidence and other elements before the investigation papers are referred to the public prosecutor.

According to him, two suspects in the case— a 46-year-old man believed to be the children’s father and a 41-year-old woman — remain in remand until Sept 11 to assist in investigations.

Earlier, the media had reported that Alzafny said police had received information from the public about a Nissan car that had fallen into the river with a boy and girl inside at 11.45 am on Sept 4.

He said investigations revealed the children, aged six and eight and residing in Shah Alam, Selangor, were believed to have drowned after being trapped inside the vehicle.

Meanwhile, JHEAINS also reported that it is conducting checks to determine the religious status of the two children to assist in the management of their funerals.
