KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- A total of 11,984 warning notices were issued by the Kuala Lumpur Police to road users under the advocacy phase of Operation Compliance with the Law (OP PUU) since Sept 6.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the operation emphasised minor road offences often committed by motorists.

"Complying with these minor laws is important because it reflects the society's ethics and discipline. Besides, the regulations were formulated for the good of everyone.

"I will continue this advocacy phase until a date to be announced later, before immediate summonses are issued to all traffic offenders in Kuala Lumpur,” he told a media conference here last night.

He said that the offences which they mainly focused on included pedestrians not using overhead bridges or zebra crossings, failing to obey traffic lights and causing traffic obstructions.

He added that they also focused on offences involving drivers or riders stopping beyond the white line at traffic light intersections and motorcyclists not wearing helmets and using modified exhausts.

"The current operational area involves those under the administration of the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters  (IPD), but it will be expanded to other IPD areas in Kuala Lumpur.

"I want to stress that we will not compromise with any road users who commit traffic offences, and urge the public to cooperate to ensure smooth traffic flow and the safety of everyone,” he said.

He added that the operation involved the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, with assistance from the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Department of Environment.

Fadil, who participated in the operation around the Bukit Bintang area last night, also had the opportunity to advise several road users who committed traffic offences.
