Man Out Fishing In Sungai Perak Drowns

IPOH, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- A man who went missing after going out to fish in Sungai Perak near the  Kampung Pulau Belayar public jetty in Gerik yesterday was found drowned this evening.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department Acting Assistant Director (Operations) Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah said the body of Azri Md Sharif, 53, was found by the search and rescue team at 5 pm.

"The search operation was carried out on the river surface, using boats up to about 2.4 kilometres from the jetty.

"The victim's belongings were also found in the search area before his body was located at about 5 pm, roughly some 100 metres from his boat," he said in a statement tonight.

He said the victim's body was taken ashore using a boat and handed over to the police for further action, with the operation ending at 7.15 pm.

Shazlean said the victim was said to have gone out around 3.30 pm yesterday to fish in Sungai Perak.

According to the victim's wife, Azri usually returned home before 7 pm if he went fishing, but he did not come back.
