Tree Crushes Tent: Woman Dead, Two Injured At Campsite

KUANTAN, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- A woman was killed, and two others were injured when a tree fell on their tent at the Pulau Santap campsite in Janda Baik early this morning.

A spokesperson for the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said firefighters from the Bentong station were mobilised to the scene following an emergency call at 7.56 am.

“When firefighters arrived at 8.45 am, they found a tent at the campsite had been crushed by a fallen tree. A 38-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were injured,” the spokesperson said in a statement today.

He said the victim’s body was handed to the police for further action, while the other two, a man and a child, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The spokesperson added that 10 JBPM personnel and six members of the Janda Baik Volunteer Fire Brigade were involved in the operation.

Meanwhile, Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman confirmed the victim killed in the Janda Baik camping incident was 38-year-old Herini Mohammad Ali, who died at the scene from severe head injuries.

Her husband, 43, and their seven-year-old child sustained injuries and were taken to Bentong Hospital for further treatment.

“Initial investigations found the incident occurred when a large tree fell and crushed two tents occupied by campers near the riverside,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the family, along with a friend, had arrived at the campsite on Sept 15. At the time of the incident, around 7.15 am, they were resting inside their tent when it was struck by the falling tree.

Yahaya said further investigations are underway to determine the operational status of the campsite and assess the safety of the surrounding area.
