KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Police arrested 19 individuals, including two key suspects, to assist in investigations into a rally by the Gerakan Anti Rumah Anutan Haram (GARAH) outside a shopping complex last night.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said all 19 detainees were locals aged 30 to 64, including 15 men and four women.
He said the two key individuals detained were rally coordinator Zamri Vinoth and activist Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak, to assist investigations under the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
“The other 17 were held under Section 105 of the Criminal Procedure Code as a preventive measure and were released on police bail at around 2 am.
“The two main suspects (Zamri Vinoth and Tamim Dahri) were taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this morning for a remand application to allow further investigations,” he said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters today.
Fadil said the rally, attended by about 100 people, sought action over alleged unauthorised places of worship but was not approved on security grounds.
He said police had received 131 reports nationwide regarding the organisation of the rally.
“Police have also been notified by the organisers, the Gabungan Pendakwah Bebas and Islamic NGOs, of a rally planned for Feb 7 outside the Sogo shopping complex. After reviewing security risks, the police have decided not to allow the rally,” he said.
In a related move, Fadil said police arrested three local Indian men in North Klang for posting seditious content on TikTok over the same issue.
The three suspects, all with prior records, were remanded for a day under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.
“Police will not tolerate anyone exploiting race, religion and royalty (3R) issues in ways that threaten public order or national security,” he warned.
He also urged the public to ignore social media provocations and raise any complaints through proper legal channels to avoid prosecution.
