Sarawak JBPM Strengthens Emergency Response With 79 Pct NART

KUCHING, March 29 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has recorded a 79 per cent National Average Response Time (NART) achievement, reflecting a high level of operational readiness in the state.

JBPM director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad said the department recorded an average response time of eight to nine minutes for bushfire incidents from January to March 2026.

“This achievement demonstrates the department’s efficiency in asset mobilisation and the continuous commitment of its personnel in ensuring every emergency call receives a swift and effective response,” he told Bernama recently.

However, he said there were five isolated cases involving fires located 25 to 35 kilometres from the nearest fire station, with response times of around 20 to 25 minutes due to distance and access constraints.

“In addition, one isolated case involved the Daro Fire and Rescue Station responding to a fire in a particularly remote location 231 kilometres away, resulting in a travel time of three hours and 32 minutes to reach the scene,” he said.

Nor Hisham said this situation illustrates the operational challenges in certain areas of Sarawak, where vast geographical areas and settlements are located far from fire stations.

Meanwhile, he said Sarawak JBPM continues to strengthen its emergency response effectiveness through strategic cooperation with the Volunteer Fire Brigades (PBS) and Community Fire Brigades.

“This collaboration plays a vital role in providing an initial response at the scene, particularly in communities located far from fire stations.

“The involvement of the PBS and Community Fire Brigades allows for early action to be taken before the arrival of the fire engine, thereby helping to contain fires from spreading further.

He added that such integrated efforts also enhance the overall preparedness for managing fire incidents in the state.

Nor Hisham affirmed JBPM's commitment to strengthening operations, enhancing team capabilities, and broadening community involvement to ensure rapid and effective emergency response for the well-being of the people and the environment.
