KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 (Bernama) -- A nine-year-old girl is feared to have drowned after falling into a drain and being swept away by strong currents at Bandar Mahkota Cheras, near here, today.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the department received an emergency call about the incident at Sri Hijau Condominium at 7.08 pm.
He said a team from the Kajang Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene and arrived 14 minutes later.
"Preliminary information suggests that the child fell into the drain while attempting to retrieve a ball. The water current was swift at the time, and it is believed the victim was swept away," he said in a statement.
Ahmad Mukhlis said a search-and-rescue operation is currently underway, with assistance from the department's Water Rescue Unit (PPDA).
