BANTING, March 28 (Bernama) -- McDonald's Malaysia today paid business zakat (tithe) for 2022 amounting to RM600,000 to the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) which was also the company’s highest tithe contribution in the past six years.

McDonald's Malaysia started paying business tithe six years ago after the company was taken over by Lionhorn Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of the Reza Group of Saudi Arabia.

McDonald's Malaysia vice-president (Human Resources) and the Internal Halal Committee chairman, Azhar Darbi said the tithe contribution this time was very meaningful to help the community in need, especially those affected by the floods in Banting.

He said this when presenting the tithe at McDonald's Banting branch, today.

At the same event, McDonald's Malaysia also presented tithe wakalah contributions worth RM500 in cash and vouchers to 50 selected families in Kuala Langat and Banting who were affected by the floods at the end of last year.

“Giving back to the community in need is the core value of McDonald's Malaysia, either through corporate social responsibility programmes or through zakat contributions,” he said.

According to Azhar, as of last year, McDonald's Malaysia had paid business zakat of RM9.85 million to the states nationwide.

“McDonald's Malaysia is also one of the zakat payers with the highest contribution in Selangor,” he added.

Meanwhile, LZS Collection Division Head Muhd Fikri Naim Harun said the board is looking forward to continued contributions from corporate companies out there such as McDonald's Malaysia in order to support the survival of asnaf (eligible to receive tithe) in the state.

“Moreover, the number of asnaf and poor families expected to increase as a result of the current economic situation. This means that the need for tithe distribution will also increase in line with the increase in the number of asnaf in Selangor,” he said.
