KANGAR, May 6 (Bernama) -- The Kampung Seberang Ramai villagers used their creativity in producing colourful savoury lemang to brighten up the community Aidilfitri celebrations.

Lemang is a traditional Malay dish made of glutinous rice, coconut milk and salt, cooked in a bamboo, lined with banana leaves.

The Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs), in a statement, said the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, attended the Aidilfitri celebration organised by the village community last night.

Also present were the secretary-general of the Ministry of Education, Datuk Yusran Shah Mohd Yusof and Malaysian Army 30th Infantry Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Mohd Zaki Abu.

More than 300 local residents attended the lively celebration.

MAIPs chief executive officer, Mohd Nazim Mohd Noor said the lemang served was symbolic to the implementation of the Kampung Seberang Ramai Royal Transformation Programme by MAIPS and the Yayasan Tuanku Syed Putra Perlis (YTSP).

He said what was special about the lemang was the use of colours, served with rendang and serunding.

Rendang is a dish using beef or other meat which is cooked slowly in coconut milk and other spices until relatively dry while serunding is often shredded meat that has been cooked in spices on low fire until the meat is dry and floss like.

He said the rendang was prepared by zakat recipients under the guidance of MAIPs which maintained the original taste of lemang with its delicious aroma.
