KUCHING, May 19 (Bernama) -- The feasibility study on upgrading the capacity of the Salim Water Treatment Plant in Sibu from 150 million litres per day (MLD) to 300 MLD, under phase three, has been completed.

Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the detailed design is in progress and targeted to be completed by the third quarter of 2023.

“The construction is estimated to commence in early 2024. With 30 months of construction period, the project is expected to be completed by 2026,” he said in reply to a question by Chieng Jin Ek (GPS-Bukit Assek) during question and answer session at the Sarawak state assembly sitting here today.

He said the upgrading of Salim Water Treatment Plant is in line with the Sarawak Water Supply Master Plan and Water Grid as it would be one of the anchor plants in the Central Region.

The project was among nine approved projects to address the water pressure problem arising from the increase of water demand due to development and growth in Sibu, he added.
