SIK, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Cooperative Commission of Malaysia (SKM) has been urged to speed up the chanelling of funds to cooperatives involved in the agrofood sector to improve the country’s food supply chain.
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar said the funds would help the relevant cooperatives to expand their business operations thus increasing food production.
He wanted SKM to facilitate immediate assistance either in the form of loans or grants to the relevant cooperatives.
“For example if the cooperatives involved in chicken breeding want to build more chicken coops, then we will help them as quickly as possible,” he told reporters after opening the state-level 2022 National Cooperatives Day here today.
He was responding to a question on the ministry’s role in helping to tackle the country’s food supply issue.
Noh said SKM allocated RM400 million under the Revolving Capital Fund for cooperatives to increase production.
Meanwhile, Noh said the ministry hoped that the government could allocate RM100 million out of the RM500 million in agrofood fund announced recently for SKM to manage, adding that the move would allow SKM to give soft loans to cooperatives in the agrofood industry.
