SEGAMAT, July 16 (Bernama) -- The Johor government plans to build at least three fish breeding centres by 2027 to increase the freshwater fish production in the state.

State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry and Rural Development Committee chairman, Datuk Zahari Sarip said efforts to achieve 62 per cent productivity growth for aquaculture products would involve the northern, southern and central zones of the state.

He said these included the implementation of the Freshwater Aquaculture Development Project using new technologies that were more effective in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0).

“The project will also open up opportunities for those who are interested to venture into freshwater fish farming.

“The freshwater fish production is also expected to increase to 38,783 tonnes in the next five years compared to the current 23,952 tonnes,” he told a press conference after officiating the ‘Jom Makan Ikan Air Tawar’ programme here today.

Meanwhile, Zahari said about 427,000 fish fry had been released in Johor waters since January this year.

“Some 13,500 freshwater fish fry of various species were released at the Sungai Bantang Bekok Forest Eco Park here today and for the first time fish fry from the kelah species were released in Johor waters after an inventory study was conducted,” he said.
