PASIR GUDANG, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- The 25th Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival (FLLSPG) will be held in Bukit Layang-Layang here in February next year.

Malaysian Kite Fliers Council president Datuk A. Rahim Nin said the festival involving the participation of 25 countries is expected to attract more than 300,000 visitors.

"Every year this festival attracts participation from various countries including from the Americas and Africa.

"The number of participants depends on the permission of the Ministry of Health and the state government," he said at a press conference after launching the Wau Merak in conjunction with the national level Pasir Gudang Kite and Wau Festival here today.

The last FLLSPG held in Bukit Layang-Layang was in February 2019 with participation from 45 countries including Colombia, Bulgaria, Hungary and Venezuela.

However, the 25th FLLSPG scheduled to take place in February 2020 was cancelled due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, A. Rahim said about 100,000 visitors are targeted to attend the national level Pasir Gudang Kite and Wau Festival, which runs for five days from Wednesday until tomorrow in Bukit Layang-Layang.

"This year, we organised a smaller-scale festival to whet the appetite of the local people for the kite festival. Even though participation is limited to locals, the response received is very encouraging," he said.

Earlier at the event, the Wau Merak, produced by Yayasan Warisan Johor, received recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as the first kite to be flown using fabric woven from Johor yarn.

Wau Merak is a traditional Johor state wau.
