2nd salvage contractor for Sg Melaka project being finalised

MELAKA, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The appointment of a second salvage contractor to complete part of the RM30 million Malacca River Cleaning and Beautification Project (Package One, Phase Two) which was derailed two years ago is now being finalised.

Water and Environment Ministry (KASA) secretary-general Datuk Seri Ir Dr Zaini Ujang said the  contractor will be given approximately 18 months from the date of appointment to complete several development components under Package One.

“Phase Two of the Malacca River Cleaning and Beautification Project has been divided into three packages with packages two and three already completed and handed over to the Melaka government in 2018.

"While under Package One, several development components are still delayed,” he said to reporters after accompanying the Melaka Yang Dipertua Tun Mohd Ali Rustam on a visit to the area today.

Also present was Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) director-general Datuk Ir Md Nasir Md Noh.

According to Zaini, KASA was committed to ensuring the new salvage contractor could complete the remainder of the project within the stipulated time.

The RM350 million project was launched in 2012 involving cleaning and beautifying Sungai Melaka involving 5.2 kilometers beginning from Jalan Hang Jebat until the Batu Hampar tidal control gate here.
