Mgda 2023: Malaysia Design Council Targets Entries From 10 Asean Countries

10/05/2023 12:17 AM

PUTRAJAYA, May 9 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Design Council (MRM) is targeting 10 entries from ASEAN countries for the Malaysia Good Design Award (MGDA) this year, said its director Husaini Ismail.

He said last year, Indonesia and Cambodia sent one entry each to compete with local companies to get MGDA recognition.

"Previously participation was only opened for local designers and companies but now we think it's best to…open the door for participation from outside.

"We expect entries from companies with well-known products because that will strengthen (the brand of) this programme at the international level," he told reporters at the awarding ceremony of MGDA 2022 and the Certified Industrial Designer (CIDe) to 15 local designers, here today.

Also present was the Investment, Trade and Industry secretary-general Datuk Seri Isham Ishak.

However, he said MRM has not received entries from foreign countries so far although several countries have enquired about the recognition programme.

He said MGDA’s recognition will indirectly add value to the products, proving that they are not only aesthetically pleasing but also high in quality.

According to Husaini, last year MRM received a total of 82 applications from various product categories of which 30 products from 18 companies were found to have met the prescribed specifications.

MGDA is the highest recognition from the government for the design industry in its efforts to support products that focus on good design as an important criterion in their production practice, thus providing a good reputation for the company in trust and assurance in business.

It involves 13 categories such as living room and bedroom-based products; household, kitchen and bathroom products; crafts; industrial products; packaging; architecture and environment; media and electronic goods as well as jewellery, fashion and accessories.
