MANJUNG, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Vale Malaysia Minerals Sdn Bhd (Vale) for sustainable development in the district involving an investment of RM5.6 million.
MPM president Syamsul Hazeman Md. Salleh said the initiative, to be carried this year until 2025, among others, involved the financing of the Urban Community Garden (KKB) project in seven Rukun Tetangga (RKT) areas worth RM600,000 in Manjung.
He said the initiative will also benefit the tourism sector with the upgrading of public facilities, construction of art objects, mural painting, street art and related aspects in the Teluk Batik Beach area and the small town of Beruas, involving an allocation of RM250,000 each.
"The projects include doodle art street in the old town area of Manjung, as well as a run in Beruas, apart from educational and community-based programmes.
"Prior to this, Vale's CSR programme only covered the Seri Manjung area. Now, through the MoU, Vale has agreed to expand their CSR to the whole of Manjung and Beruas districts," he told a press conference after the MoU signing ceremony, here, today .
Syamsul Hazeman signed the MoU on behalf of MPM, while Vale by its chief executive officer of Malaysia, Leonardo Paiva.
Present as a witness was State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching.
Meanwhile, Syamsul Hazeman said the selection of Beruas as a pilot location gave MPM the opportunity to give a 'new touch' to the town, especially its over 100-year-old shophouse building, to make it more attractive to the local community as well as a tourist attraction.
Paiva, in his speech, said that Vale is pleased with the opportunity of cooperating with MPM for the purpose of achieving sustainable development.
"We are excited to work with MPM to further enhance the district's vibrancy through community-centric projects that are designed to create a lasting socio-economic impact for the local communities.
"Since we began in Malaysia in 2012, Vale has invested over RM70 million on social programmes in Manjung, with a special focus on improving the lives of communities residing near it's operational site in Teluk Rubiah, Manjung," he added.
