KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- Sri Kota Specialist Medical Centre (SKSMC), in continuing its commitment to bolster the healthcare workforce and address the nationwide nursing shortage issue, has sponsored a total of 204 students from B40 families through its Nursing Sponsorship Programme since 1999.
The private tertiary healthcare provider, in a statement today, said to date, its total sponsorship amounted to RM13 million.
It said the sponsorship encompassed tuition and exam fees, as well as monthly, accommodation, book and travel allowances.
“This year, 34 nursing graduates have returned to contribute their skills and knowledge by serving at SKSMC,” it said, adding that the Nursing Sponsorship Programme reflects a commitment to education, professional growth, and community welfare.
SKSMC Hospital Director Tan Suet Guan said the medical centre is dedicated to advancing education and eradicating poverty as part of its corporate social responsibility.
“This initiative to sponsor students from B40 families represents this endeavour. Our commitment extends to investing in individual careers, contributing to the overall strength and resilience of the healthcare industry,” she said.
Tan said as a private healthcare tertiary provider, SKSMC also wanted to do its part in addressing the nursing shortage in Malaysia.
“According to the World Health Organisation, countries in the Southeast Asia region including Malaysia, must double their efforts to bridge the nursing gap and achieve health coverage for all by 2030.
“We sincerely hope that proactive measures like ours will not only promote a caring community but also play a meaningful role in fostering a brighter future for healthcare professionals.
“Ultimately, this contributes to advancing health and well-being for the nation,” she added.
Tan also said that through collaborations with public and private institutions offering nursing diploma programmes, sponsored nurses receive quality training, equipping them with the necessary skills for success in the healthcare landscape.
