MELAKA, 8 Feb (Bernama) --The Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) was named the winner of the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard Award in Vientiane, Laos, recently.
Senior Exco for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Datuk Rais Yasin said the recognition would catalyse to boost the state tourism industry in conjunction with the 2024 Visit Melaka Year (TMM2024).
MBMB was among the three local government authorities nominated to represent Malaysia for the award, he told reporters at the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard Award Appreciation ceremony last night.
Also present was State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman and State Secretary Datuk Zaidi Johari here last night.
Rais said the award is based on seven criteria which included environmental management, cleanliness, waste management, environmental protection awareness, municipal safety and health in addition to infrastructure and tourism facilities.
"The various achievements made by the state last year also prove that Melaka has achieved excellent economic, social and physical standards," he said.
At the event, Rais also presented prizes to the winners of the “Laman Indah Melaka 2024” contest aimed at building conducive and clean villages and residential areas in the state.
A total of 10 villages and seven housing estates participated in the competition.
