Lkim Ensures Only Authorised Hardcore Fishermen Receive Monthly Allowance

KUALA PERLIS, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) conducts a monthly review of the fishermen's list to ensure only authorised hardcore fishermen receive the RM300 monthly allowance nationwide.

LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil said fishermen who are not devoted to the job and do not meet the 120-day sea requirement would be disqualified.

“We update the list based on LKIM set conditions.They must go out to sea for 120 days annually to qualify. If they are inactive or hold other jobs they are ineligible.

“We do not have the exact number of revoked qualifications but they are estimated to exceed 1,000,” he told reporters after a MADANI programme for fishermen's children here today. 

Meanwhile, Muhammad Faiz said the number of active young fishermen have risen by 30 per cent and LKIM will offer training to improve their skills, given the job's challenges falling under the 3D (dirty, dangerous and difficult) category.

At the programme today, 100 fishermen's children in Perlis received school supplies donations organised by LKIM in collaboration with Petronas Dagang Berhad the National Fishermen's Association (NEKMAT).

“Each student will receive a RM150 cash voucher and school supplies, including bags, caps, water bottles, notebooks and stationery,” he said. 

He said Perlis was selected for the programme in the Northern Zone after Melaka in the Southern Zone and the programme would subsequently be expanded to Sabah, Sarawak and Pahang.
