Malaysia closely Following development Of Helicopter Crash Carrying Iranian President

PUTRAJAYA, May 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is closely following the development of the helicopter crash involving Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his delegation which reportedly crashed on Sunday afternoon.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said he heard about the incident while on his way back to Malaysia from a working visit to Central Asia.

Iran's Foreign Minister Dr Hossein Amirabdollahian was also reported to be in the helicopter.

"However, so far it is understood that the search and rescue mission is still going on despite the bad weather.

"My prayer is that all those involved are found soon and are well. Hopefully, there will be good news soon," Mohamad said in a statement on Monday.

He said any further developments regarding the incident would be notified immediately through the official social media page of Wisma Putra (Malaysia's Foreign Ministry).

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that Raisi was on a flight home from a meeting to inaugurate a dam on the border of Iran and Azerbaijan when the helicopter he was on crashed while landing near Varzaqan region.

Besides Raisi and Amirabdollahian, East Azerbaijan Province Governor Malek Rahmati, the head of the Friday prayer in Tabriz, Hojjatoleslam Al Hashem and several other individuals were also reported to be in the helicopter.
