ALOR SETAR, June 12 (Bernama) -- Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has achieved a significant improvement in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024, announced today, under the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).
UUM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan said the university has shown commendable progress, moving up to the 301-400 bracket in the global rankings.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the entire UUM community for this achievement. It reflects the continuous and dedicated efforts from all parties to elevate the university's reputation both nationally and internationally.
“This improvement is a result of UUM's steadfast commitment to its role as an educational institution that positively impacts society and the environment. Our goal is not only to excel academically but also to support students in need by providing them with access to quality education,” he said in a statement today.
He said the THE Impact Rankings 2024 assess universities worldwide based on their achievements concerning 17 SDGs.
Overall, UUM excelled in five of the 17 SDGs: SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
“In particular, UUM stood out in providing fair and equitable access to education across all societal layers, including scholarship programmes and financial aid for underprivileged students, ranking 72nd globally for SDG 10,” Mohd Foad said.
He said UUM ranked 101-200 for SDG 4, SDG 11 (ranked 201-300), SDG 16 (ranked 101-200) and SDG 17 (ranked 201-300).
Mohd Foad said this achievement further strengthens UUM's position as one of the nation's leading universities and showcases its capacity to make a significant global impact through higher education.
THE Impact Rankings 2024, released annually, listed 1,963 universities worldwide for the 2024 ratings.
