TARGETED DIESEL SUBSIDY: STRONGER ENFORCEMENT NEEDED TO CONTROL PRICE HIKES

IPOH, June 13 (Bernama) -- The government has been urged to be more aggressive and proactive in implementing enforcement measures to keep the prices of daily necessities under control following the implementation of targeted diesel subsidy.

Former soldier Mohd Wazir Bakhari, 45, said he supports the implementation of targeted diesel subsidy as it could help curb the issue of fuel smuggling to neighbouring countries.

“Previously, there were numerous news reports revealing the smuggling of diesel from Malaysia to neighbouring countries. Therefore, I believe the government’s decision is a bold move that also helps save public funds for more beneficial purposes,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Following the implementation of targeted diesel subsidy, the government has implemented a floating diesel price mechanism starting June 10. The Subsidised Diesel Control System continues to be in effect and the RM200 BUDI MADANI cash assistance has been introduced to assist private diesel vehicle owners, small-scale farmers and smallholders.

Mohd Wazir, who owns a diesel-operated vehicle, is greatly relieved and appreciative to be among those eligible for BUDI MADANI.

“As a user, I find the assistance through Budi MADANI very worthwhile. Moreover, I don’t use the vehicle daily, except for trips back to my hometown, going to the farm and transporting goods,” he said.

Trader Hasbol Mustafa, 39, who offers goods transportation services, said although he supports the move, he wants the government to implement integrated monitoring due to concerns that some parties might take advantage by raising the prices of goods arbitrarily.

“I support what the government is doing, but from the people’s perspective, we want stricter monitoring and action taken against any parties attempting to raise prices recklessly,” he said.

Echoing this sentiment was farmer Liew Kok Ming, 51, who wants the government, through relevant agencies, to go on the ground more frequently to explain the details of the BUDI MADANI programme to all target groups.

“We need to understand that not all target groups clearly understand this initiative and how to apply for it,” he said.
