SIBU, June 15 (Bernama) -- The 10-hectare Kemuyang Muslim Cemetery, around 20 kilometres (km) from here will turn green thanks to the 1,000 trees planted in conjunction with the Sibu Division level 2024 International Forest Day celebrations beginning today.

Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said that 510 trees will be planted first under the programme by the Sarawak Forestry Department, the Sibu Islamic Welfare Trust Board and the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Nangka constitutency service centre, with the remainder being planted in stages.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Forestry Department director Datuk Hamden Mohammad said that the programme was part of the national 100 million tree planting campaign.

“Sarawak has been entrusted with planting 35 million out of 100 million trees. We actually have met the 35 million target last Saturday but we will not stop here but continue to plant more trees,” he said.

The Green Malaysia Campaign will end in December 2025, he said, and expressed hope that it would be continued as it was part of the state’s efforts towards sustainable development.
