TAIPING, June 24 (Bernama) -- Some 50 participants involved in the fields of zoology and veterinary science are taking part in the 15th Field Training Course 2024, organised by the Malaysian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria (MAZPA).

The course, held at Taiping Zoo & Night Safari (ZTNS), runs from today until July 3.

MAZPA chairman, Dr Kevin Lazarus, said the comprehensive training programme focuses on various aspects of zoo management and animal care, including best practices for maintaining animals in captivity and ensuring their physical and mental well-being.

“Participants will learn both theoretical and practical aspects during this training programme, including research on understanding animal behavior and habitats, as well as the role of zoos in educating the public about wildlife conservation,” he told reporters here today.

“In addition, participants will be given knowledge on hygiene, sanitation, pest control, dietary needs and animal nutrition. We strongly encourage veterinarians and zoologists to attend this programme as it provides fundamental ideas on how to manage animals,” Dr Lazarus added.

He said this after the programme's opening ceremony, which was officiated by the Director of Management Services at the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT), Ahmad Shariffuddin Kassim, who represented council president, Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir.

Earlier, Ahmad Shariffuddin, in his speech, emphasised that all participants should fully utilise the training programme, which is designed to enhance knowledge and skills in handling wildlife, covering aspects such as animal care, conservation and research.

“It is crucial for us to continuously improve the standards of zoo management and operations to ensure the welfare of the animals and provide valuable experiences for visitors,” he said.
