HULU SELANGOR, July 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is optimistic that the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif Professor Dr Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad Al-Tayyeb's visit to Malaysia, especially to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia’s (Jakim) Darul Quran, will open a new dimension to the empowerment and development of tahfiz and Al-Quran education in this country.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the Grand Sheikh’s visit is also expected to open wider opportunities for Darul Quran graduates to continue their studies at the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Egypt.
“This opens up wider opportunities for Darul Quran graduates to continue their Al-Quran studies not only at Maahad Qiraat Shoubra, Egypt but also in other fields at Al-Azhar University,” he said in Arabic during the Sheikh’s visit to Darul Quran in Kuala Kubu Bharu, today.
Also present were Jakim director-general Datuk Hakimah Mohd Yusoff and Darul Quran principal Mohd Ansarullah Mohd Hashim.
Mohd Na'im said that since independence, Malaysia has been committed to strengthening tahfiz and Al-Quran education through various private and government tahfiz institutions, including with the establishment of Darul Quran as an institution for studying Al-Quran and Qiraat.
He said since its establishment in 1966, Darul Quran has played a big role in tahfiz education in this country.
“Until now, Darul Quran has produced more than 11,000 graduates who played an important role in shaping the personality of the ummah and at the same time encouraging the development of tahfiz education in the country.
“Even at the tertiary level, tahfiz has also been introduced as one of the fields of study and as an added value for professional studies,” he said.
Mohd Na'im said the integration of Al-Quran education components with other fields can produce a generation of Al-Quran memorisers who master other fields of knowledge and subsequently create a balance of worldly and spiritual well-being.
His Eminence Dr Ahmad Al-Tayyeb is on a special four-day visit to Malaysia at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
