NUMBER OF LABOUR FORCE UP 0.1 PCT IN MAY - DOSM

PUTRAJAYA, July 10 (Bernama) -- The number of labour force in May 2024 strengthened further by 0.1 per cent to record 17.15 million persons from 17.12 million recorded in April, with the labour force participation rate remained at 70.3 per cent, according to the Labour Force Statistics released today.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the number of employed persons remained in a positive trend, with a rise of 0.1 per cent month-on-month to 16.58 million persons compared to 16.56 million persons in April.

“The number of unemployed reduced by 0.1 per cent to 566,100 persons from 566,400 in the previous month.

“The unemployment rate during the month remained unchanged at 3.3 per cent,” he said in a statement.

Regarding the employment situation, he said the employees’ category comprised 75.1 per cent of the total employed persons, an increase of 0.1 per cent to 12.44 million persons from 12.43 million in April.

Similarly, the category of own-account workers showed an upward trend, with an addition of 0.3 per cent to 3.05 million persons from 3.04 million the previous month.

Mohd Uzir also said that the actively unemployed, or those who were available for work and were actively seeking jobs, made up 79.9 per cent of the total unemployed persons, an increase of 0.1 per cent to 452,000 persons (April 2024:451,400 persons)

“By duration of unemployment for the actively unemployed, 61.5 per cent were those who were unemployed for less than three months, whereas 6.8 per cent were those who were in long-term unemployment for more than a year.

“The inactively unemployed or those who believed that there were no jobs available were reduced by 0.8 per cent to 114,000 persons,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Uzir said the number of persons outside the labour force in May 2024 decreased slightly by 0.003 per cent to 7.23 million persons (April 2024: 7.23 million persons).

Some 42.7 per cent were due to housework or family responsibilities, while 41.1 per cent were due to schooling or training.
