LABUAN, July 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s international business and financial centre of Labuan is renowned not just for its strategic economic significance but also for its vibrant culinary scene.

Among the many gastronomic treasures of this island, one dish stands out as a favourite among both locals and tourists; the famous fish soup.

Labuan's fish soup, a humble yet flavourful dish, has captured the hearts and taste buds of many.

This delicacy, known for its aromatic broth and fresh ingredients, is a testament to the island's rich maritime heritage.

The fish, often caught fresh from the surrounding waters, is the star of this dish, providing a delicate yet robust flavour that is complemented by a medley of local herbs and spices.

For the locals, the fish soup is more than just a meal; it is a symbol of home and tradition.

A civil servant, Sharoil Yussof, 42, said many residents recall fond memories of family gatherings and community events where the soup was a central feature.

“It’s a dish that brings people together…we have it at celebrations, and it’s something that every family here knows how to make,” he said when met at one of the fish soup restaurants here today.

Visitors to Labuan quickly find themselves drawn to this culinary gem.

The fish soup has become a must-try item for tourists, often recommended by locals and featured in various media platforms.

Charlotte, a tourist from Australia, said: “I have read about the fish soup before coming here, but tasting it was something else entirely.

“The freshness of the fish and the blend of spices were incredible…it’s a highlight of my trip,” she said.

Local eateries and restaurants often have their own unique take on the fish soup, by adding a personal touch while maintaining the traditional essence.

Fishermen Harbour, a popular fish soup restaurant, offers at least six types of fish soups in its signature breakfast menu. These include Tomato Soup, Salted Vegetable Soup, Bitter Gourd Soup, Tom Yum Soup, Curry Soup, and Nyonya Soup.

The popularity of Labuan's fish soup has also had a positive impact on the local economy.

The demand for fresh fish and other ingredients supports local fishermen and markets, while the influx of tourists boosts the island’s hospitality sector.

Cooking classes and food tours centred around fish soup have also become popular activities, offering visitors a chance to learn about the dish’s history and preparation methods.

Whether enjoyed at a bustling market, a seaside restaurant, or a cozy home kitchen, the fish soup of Labuan is a true taste of this vibrant island’s soul.
