KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) -- Maxis Berhad, Malaysia’s leading integrated telco, continues to make a positive impact through its flagship community programme, Maxis eKelas, which aims to improve the academic performance of students in rural communities.

This free after-school digital learning initiative has seen tremendous growth, with over 120,000 registered users and counting.

As part of the programme, Maxis recently awarded the Anugerah Gemilang eKelas 2024 student grants to students from nine states across Malaysia in recognition of their academic growth.

Maxis Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Mariam Bevi Batcha said through eKelas, Maxis look forward to supporting even more students on their educational journeys, enabling them to excel well into the future.

“We are proud to recognise our Maxis eKelas participants for their academic and personal growth. Their hard work and dedication serve as an inspiration to us as we continue our mission to empower students through digital learning,” she said in a statement.

Launched in 2017, the Anugerah Gemilang eKelas grant programme honours students who demonstrate significant progress in their educational journeys.

Besides academic improvements, students are assessed based on their participation in eKelas activities and competitions, along with endorsements from their teachers on their individual growth and development.

During a ceremony held recently for the 2024 recipients, the grants were jointly presented by Deputy Director of the Educational Resources and Technology Division at the Ministry of Education, Fadzliaton Zainudin and CEO of Maxis Goh Seow Eng.

The ceremony was also attended by representatives from the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) and the Sports, Co-curricular & Arts Division (BSKK) of the Ministry of Education.

Primary school students were awarded grants worth RM750 each, while secondary school students received grants of RM1,500 each. The respective grants were deposited into the students’ National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) accounts, providing them with future financial support to further their education.

In addition to the grants, Maxis recently completed the contribution of 330 refurbished laptops to 77 primary and secondary schools nationwide. These contributions aim to help students, especially those in rural communities, access digital learning resources such as Maxis eKelas.

Open to all students nationwide from Year 4 to Form 5, Maxis eKelas provides free access to quality educational content aligned with the Malaysian school syllabus. The focus areas include Science, Mathematics, English, Bahasa Melayu, History, and experiential learning.

Last year, Maxis eKelas officially became part of the Ministry of Education’s digital learning portal DELIMa, further expanding its accessibility for all students and teachers nationwide.

Meanwhile, Anugerah Gemilang eKelas 2024 grant recipient Cherrylane Rachell Cornalius, a Form 4 student from SMK Tun Fuad Stephens, Sabah, said, "I believe that effort leads to results; as a recipient of the Anugerah Gemilang eKelas, I am certainly more motivated to continue to improve myself."

Another recipient, Chong Pohyi, a student from SMK Tasek Utara, Johor, said that through participating in eKelas competitions, she learnt to overcome her fear of speaking in front of the public.

"Now, I’m doing a matriculation programme to pursue my tertiary studies, and receiving the SSPN grant certainly helps with my education journey," said the student from SMK Tasek Utara, Johor.
