NILAI, July 20 (Bernama) -- Three flood mitigation projects in Pekan Nilai have been approved with funding from the Federal and Negeri Sembilan governments.
State Local Government Development, Housing and Transport Committee chairman J Arul Kumar, said the projects include the Sungai Batang Labu Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB), an upgrade of the Taman Desa Jasmin rainwater catchment system and enhancement to the Nilai town drainage system.
Arul said the RTB project for Sungai Batang Labu is currently in the study phase with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS). Once completed, it will improve water flow from Sungai Sekah and Sungai Batang Nilai, thereby reducing the flood risk in Nilai town.
"Pekan Nilai often floods due to its low-lying location and the confluence of Sungai Batang Nilai, Sungai Sekah and Sungai Batang Labu.
"This confluence causes water to backflow, leading to flooding in some areas.
The rainwater catchment pond at Taman Desa Jasmin is not functioning properly and cannot release water in stages as planned," he said in a statement here today.
The cost of upgrading the catchment pond in Taman Desa Jasmin is RM3 million, while the upgrade of the Pekan Nilai drainage system is RM700,000, he added.
