KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) -- The public watching the live broadcast of the installation ceremony of the 17th King of Malaysia through ‘wayang pacak’ (open-air cinema) were thrilled to witness the ceremony steeped in the traditions and customs of the Malay Rulers.

As early as 8.30 am, local residents began gathering to watch the historic event on a big screen at the People's Housing Programme (PPR) Sri Pantai in Bangsar here.

A resident, Loh Boon Shuan, 68, said the programme provided him with understanding and knowledge, especially related to the country's constitution.

“Apart from the ceremonial screening, there was a quiz related to the installation ceremony, the constitution, and current issues. You gain knowledge besides watching the ceremony.

“This ceremony is a very important event for the people. Previously, I had the experience of witnessing and covering several such ceremonies, but this time I get to watch it with friends,” the former journalist told Bernama.

Former lorry driver N. Silvaraju, 64, said the screening should continue as it can provide a clearer understanding of the royal institution to the younger generation.

“This ceremony happens every five years. But this time it is very interesting because we can watch it on a big screen together.

“Today, I brought my child to watch the ceremony. I am very excited and happy when there are activities like this at our PPR,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya Information Department director Sabarudin Yeop Hamza said the programme was held at 11 National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) in the respective parliamentary constituency in the Federal Territories.

“We involve all MADANI communities with several activities such as quizzes related to the royal institution, the constitution, and current issues, aiming to enliven this ceremony,” he said.
